Admissions

From middle school to high school.

The Future Freshman Academy is a free summer program that helps incoming ninth graders get ready for Highland Prep West, in reading, in math, and in what high school actually feels like.

The Academy

A running start on ninth grade.

Many students finish eighth grade without all the reading and math they will lean on in high school. The Future Freshman Academy closes that gap over the summer, so the first year starts on solid ground instead of in catch-up mode.

The Academy runs on the Highland Prep West campus in the weeks before school opens. Students brush up on reading comprehension and core math, learn how our building and schedule work, and meet a few teachers and classmates ahead of the first day.

It is built for incoming freshmen who want extra preparation, and it is especially useful for students who found math or reading tough in middle school. The program is free, on campus, and optional.

Dates and registration are announced each spring. To ask about this year’s Academy, call the front office at 623-274-2540.

What changes in high school.

Ninth grade is a real step up from middle school. Knowing what is different ahead of time makes the change a lot smaller.

The building is bigger, and so is the freedom

Students change rooms for every class and keep track of their own schedule. We walk incoming freshmen through the campus and a normal day before it counts.

The work moves faster

High school reading and math build quickly. A few weeks of review over the summer keeps a student from starting the year already behind.

Grades start counting toward graduation

Ninth grade is the first year on the high school transcript. Good habits in the fall are much easier than catching up in the spring.

New people, on purpose

Students arrive from a lot of different schools. The Academy is a low-pressure way to meet classmates and a few teachers before the first bell.
