We are very excited to share that over the summer, we were awarded a one year grant through the A for Arizona Expansion & Innovation Fund, to create a capstone experience for our junior and seniors by actively developing and broadening community business internship opportunities. While we have had success with former students receiving internships, this will be a formal, first generation internship program and one of the first of its kind in the nation. Our goal is to double the number of internships we have had by designing, developing, and launching a formal internship program integrated into our STEM curriculum and key initiatives.
We are equally excited to announce that we have hired Dan Oakes as a Principal Consultant to spend at least six months with us getting our program created and launched. Dan has spent 30 years in the recruiting and human resources industry, and recently retired from Randstad Sourceright as their North America Chief Operating Officer. This knowledge and his network will be integral to our success. Mr. Oakes will be working closely with key faculty members and students, so please watch for emails and phone calls from him as he quickly comes up to speed. His contact information is:

Welcome aboard Mr. Oakes and congratulations to everyone in our Highland Prep Schools on this grant award!
Highland Prep (HP) features a senior Student Internship Program as a way to help students gain valuable insight into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) related fields. HP also believes that students who participate in such field-related experiences will increasingly choose, and participate in STEM careers. According to a recent study called “High School Careers”, 326 employers were surveyed about the importance of career development activities. Ninety percent of those companies indicated their belief that high school internships and volunteering help students get into better colleges, and 89% view that experience as providing students with a “competitive advantage in securing a college internship or full-time job” (Education Week, 2014).

PLTW Engineering Design & Development (EDD)
This course is the final, capstone experience in the Project Lead the Way sequence of learning. In this unique design course, students work in teams to engineer and develop original solutions to valid open-ended technical problems by applying the engineering design process. Students perform research to choose, validate, and justify a technical problem. After carefully defining the problem, teams design, build, and test their solutions while working closely with industry professionals who provide mentoring opportunities. Finally, student teams present and defend their original solution to an outside panel. This course is appropriate for 12th grade students.
